Drishyam 3 Review: No Meandering, Georgkutty Lives On With Mohanlal And Jeethu Joseph's Brilliance
Drishyam 3 is as normal as Drishyam and Drishyam 2. Here as well, the protagonist Georgekutty (Mohanlal) is doing everything at his disposal to protect his family, mainly his elder daughter. But Drishyam 3 does a pivot, an important one, in which it shows that Georgekutty is human and he might get tired and exhausted in the entire show of run from the law while acting smart with his knowledge of crime and punishment from the movies.
Georgekutty is the biggest asset of Drishyam. Why I am saying is: In Drishyam and Drishyam 2, you see a superhuman Georgekutty and you get goosebumps when he execute his plans, however, Georgekutty of Drishyam 3 is different and his humane metamorphosis presents a different shade which is more frailer and tired, that of course provides Mohanlal to excel. More over, since 2013, Mohanlal and Georgekutty are indistinguishable in Drishyam setup.
For Drishyam 3, Jeethu Joseph is technical asset as Mohanal in the acting front. Drishyam 3, will again, prove that how tactical and successful a Writer-Director Jeethu Joseph can be.
On the story side, Drishyam 3 is not as edge of the seat thriller like its earlier versions. The Georgekutty magic comes in the last quarter and and also passes by as it was anticipated. But, what holds Drishyam 3 as a good story lies in the process to reach the zenith. In this process, the story travels to through the past and its characters come to haunt Georgekutty heavily and keeps the hero and the audience engaged to the movie. Like other Drishyam instalments, past is an important element of Drishyam 3 as well and it has been marked by the long presense of SI Sahadevan (Kalabhavan Shajon) and his vengeance. The story reveals some more undisclosed parts from the Varun Prabhakar episode and what happened to his remains subsequently. What the writer chose to do with a frail, human and tired protagonist is unexpected but much needed story twist. Otherwise, how long the audience would look at Georgekutty and remain settled with the idea that Georgekutty’s brilliance is eternal and can’t be defeated.
One negative the audience might observe is the way movie was concluded in the last ten minutes. As the audience was expecting grand Georgekutty designs to explode, silly ideas come to play and movie ends – obviously, this is not what a viewer, for that matter, a Mohanlal fan is expecting. Even if we agree that the twists there were okay, the speed it was executed killed the joy of the franchise’s surprises.
Apart from Georgekutty, Sahadevan is ruthless as he was in Drishyam and the background music comes with him establishes his evil intentions in the interval block itself. That take us to two important ingredients of Drishyam 3: Background music and cinematography. Though it starts like a drama, the second half turns the pace to a thriller and the background music accompanying it enhances the whole experience. Same as the cinematography as well. Green is the story carrier of Drishyam 3. Because, without green and greenery, the Idukki settings of the movie is meaningless.
Overall, though Drishyam 3 is not as good as its previous versions, it has some plot twists concerning the character transformations. That gives Mohalal to perform and he wouldn’t disappoint you. Drishyam 3 is watchable. It has a good story line and never meanders like franchises which go to unwanted territories only to kill the basic concept of the movie.
