Kangana Ranaut's 'Emergency' Gets A New Release Date

After facing multiple hindrances and delays, Kangana Ranaut’s controversial solo directorial debut, Emergency, finally got a release date. After completion of its CBFC process, the political thriller is all set to hit the theaters now.

Following the indefinite postponement, the actor-politician Emergency will now hit the theaters on 17 January 2025. Announcing the new release date of the film, the BJP MP shared a new poster featuring herself as the former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi.

The poster also depicts other notable figures of the venture, with Vishak Nair as Indira’s son Sanjay Gandhi, Anupam Kher as Janata Party leader Jai Prakash Narayan, Shreyas Talpade as former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee, and Milind Soman as Field Marshall Sam Manekshaw.

Announcing the release date, Kangana wrote on her social media handle, “17th January 2025 – The epic saga of the nation’s most powerful woman and the moment that altered India’s destiny. #Emergency – Unveils Only in cinemas on 17.01.2025!”

The biographical political thriller delves into the life of Indira Gandhi, who imposed a 21-month emergency period from 1975 to 1977, when she was the prime minister.

Previously slated for a September 5 release, the film was later postponed due to its issues with the certification board. Moreover, since the release of the trailer, the film has undergone various controversies and issues as the Sikh organization (SGPC) objected to its release and accused the filmmakers of misrepresenting the community and twisting historical facts.

After months of stalling the film in the certification process and the intervention of the court, the CBFC suggested the makers trim certain portions of the film, saying that certain scenes depict a polarizing figure cutting a deal with political parties. After multiple legal obligations, the film is finally set to hit the theaters next year.

Co-produced by Zee Studios and Kangana’s Manikarnika Films, Emergency marks Kangana’s second directorial after the 2019 historical Manikarnika: The Queen of Jhansi, co-directed by Krish.
