In a heartfelt note, singer Amaal Mallik took to his Instagram to share a deeply personal and vulnerable note regarding his mental health. Revealing his struggle against clinical depression, the singer spoke about the pain he endured over the years trying to make his parents proud, which led to his strained relationship with his brother Armaan Mallik.
Amaal shared his struggle of making a name for himself and carving his own identity, like his brother, and leaving the shadow of his family’s musical legacy. Describing the journey of him and his brother as “terrific,” he expressed how the two brothers have drifted apart due to the actions of their parents.

“For years, I’ve been made to feel like I am less inspite of spending days & nights toiling away to make a safe life for my people. Cancelled every dream of mine to only find myself to be spoke down to and question what I’ve ever done. I have spent my blood, sweat & tears to create each of the 126 melodies that have released over the last decade,” he wrote.
As a composer, he has worked on films like Khoobsurat (Naina), Roy (Sooraj Dooba Hai), Airlift (Soch Na Sake), Sanam Re, Kapoor & Sons, MS Dhoni: The Untold Story, Badrinath Ki Dulhania, Kabir Singh and more recently Bhool Bhulaiyaa 3.
Amaal shared how his family’s actions over the years had undermined his self-worth and taken a toll on him. Despite his parents leaving no opportunity to “disturb [my] well being & belittle all [my] friendships, [my] relationships, [my] mindset, [my] self confidence,” Amaal described he kept on moving forward.
“But today I stand at a point where I have been robbed of my peace, drained emotionally & maybe financially too but that’s the least of my concerns,” he wrote.

Announcing his decision to step away from his personal ties, the composer stated that he will only maintain professional ties with his family. Amaal also added that the decision was not one made from anger but from necessity to heal and reclaim life.
“I refuse to let the past rob me of my future any longer. I am committed to rebuilding my life, piece by piece, with honesty and strength,” he wrote, ending the note.

Amaal Mallik began his career at a young age, assisting in producing and arranging music. He got his big break with Jai Ho. He is the son of composer Daboo Mallik and Jyothi Mallik and is the elder brother of singer Armaan Mallik.
