MBL & ABRAW Unveil Their Latest Song ‘Makkana’
Bringing together two distinct voices from the evolving Malayalam hip-hop scene, Def Jam Recordings India presents ‘Makkana’, the latest single by MBL and ABRAW. Set against the cultural backdrop of Malabar, the track explores a deeply personal yet universally resonant experience of love- one that unfolds through memory, tradition, and emotional restraint.
At its core, ‘Makkana’ is a love-driven narrative that moves fluidly between past and present, weaving together childhood memories, familial influences, and the formative impressions that shape how we experience affection.

The song captures the quiet intensity of admiration- the kind that lingers in glances and heartbeats, what the artists describe as “qhalbinte thudippu”- rather than grand declarations.
Sonically, the track brings together the textured essence of Malabari hip-hop with contemporary, globally influenced production. MBL’s rooted, culturally rich sound- infused with Mappila pattu influences and subtle Arabic tonalities- finds a seamless counterpoint in ABRAW’s smooth, melodic and urban approach.
The inclusion of Arabic verses adds a poetic dimension, deepening the song’s exploration of devotion, transformation, and emotional conflict.
Speaking about the track, MBL shares, “Makkana comes from a very personal place for me. Growing up in Malabar, love isn’t always expressed openly; it’s felt in small, quiet ways through culture, family, and everyday moments.

I wanted to show that kind of silent admiration, where even distance has meaning. The Arabic and Mappila influences are a big part of who I am, so they naturally became part of the sound and story of the track.”
ABRAW adds, “For me, ‘Makkana’ was about balancing something traditional with a modern, global feel. The emotion in the song is soft but strong, and I tried to reflect that in my delivery, calm but still meaningful. It’s not a song that says everything directly, and that’s what makes it special.”
With ‘Makkana’, MBL and ABRAW continue to push the boundaries of Malayalam hip-hop, offering a sound that is both culturally grounded and sonically progressive. The track stands as a testament to a new wave of artists who are redefining regional music by blending heritage with contemporary expression.
