L2: Empuraan Shatters Records With Day 1 Box Office Record of Rs 22 Crore

Mohanlal and director Prithviraj’s L2: Empuraan, the sequel to the blockbuster film Lucifer, has shattered every conceivable record in Malayalam cinema. With its release on March 27, the sequel opened with impressive numbers, over twice the previous records of any Malayalam film. Here is the day one box office collection of L2: Empuraan.

The Prithviraj directorial has been receiving positive reviews, with audiences praising its high production value and gripping narrative. Produced by Aashirvad Cinemas and Sree Gokulam Movies, Empuraan was released in multiple languages, including Malayalam, Hindi, Telugu, Kannada, and Tamil. As a promising start, the action thriller has collected Rs 22 crore nett in India. With this, L2: Empuraan has now emerged as the biggest opener in Malayalam cinema.

Prithviraj broke the records created by his other films such as The Goat Life and Lucifer, which previously held the record for being the highest openers in Malayalam cinema. His 2024 release, The Goat Life, had opened to Rs 8.95 crore net in India. Prior to that, it was Lucifer with a Rs 6.10 crore opening in 2019.

As per Sacnilk reports, L2: Empuraan collected Rs 19.45 crore from the Malayalam version alone, followed by Rs 1.2 crore from Telugu, Rs 80 lakh from Tamil, Rs 50 lakh from Hindi and Rs 5 lakh from Kannada.

Moreover, the film’s dominance in Kerala is particularly evident with an overall 61.02 percent occupancy in Malayalam on its first day. The film witnessed a strong occupancy rate in key cities like Kochi (97.5 percent) and Trivandrum (84.75 percent).

Written by Murali Gopy, Empuraan is the second installment in the Lucifer trilogy. Mohanlal reprises his role as Khureshi-Ab’raam/Stephen Nedumpally, while Prithviraj, Manju Warrier, Tovino Thomas, Indrajith Sukumaran, and Suraj Venjaramoodu lead a star-studded cast. British actor Jerome Flynn, best known for Game of Thrones, adds an international appeal to the project.

As per Timeline‘s verdict, Prithviraj understands his protagonist really well. He knows that the slow-motion shots and careful delivery of dialogues mixed with a superb background score will bring the Mohanlal fans back to the theaters. L2E is first and foremost a movie for Mohanlal fans. The revenge part of the movie remains intriguing.
