The review of Time Now has acclaimed the film as proof of the perfect blend of magical realism and period drama, which wrote, “Thangalaan is a well-thought-of and well-produced experience in both visual and cerebral storytelling. What this film has managed to do is prove that magical realism and period dramas can work.” Vikram’s performance in the movie is ranked among the top three in his career and if not already his best.

The Times Of India seems to understand the true potential of the director Pa Ranjith and its impact, it seems. The review calls the movie, Thangalaan seems to be the weakest work in director Pa Ranjith’s filmography. The film’s screenplay is too abstract, which might not be everyone’s cup of tea.”

India Today seems to be disappointed by the film it seems. It calls the film a “disappointing watch”. It added “The screenplay is slow and lacks engaging elevation sequences. Despite the brilliant performances from the lead cast, Thangalaan is a disappointing watch. The tedious first half and the convoluted second half make the film a middling affair. Ranjith used sync sound, which is a major drawback, and it is hard to follow their dialect and understand their emotions. Thangalaan is a wasted opportunity in terms of storytelling ”

Hindustan Times feels “Pa Ranjith’s central character is usually an underprivileged person and Thangalaan is no different. The film may not be perfect but it’s a film that’s unforgettable thanks to its excellent performances, especially Vikram’s. Whether it is the emotional scenes or the action ones, Vikram makes you feel every emotion he goes through. Parvathy and Pasupathy are excellent as well and all three have mouthed the period Tamil dialogues with extreme elan. Malavika Mohanan is good in her role too.”

Above all this, the points highlighted by all the reviews include the dialect – the different slang of Tamil, spoken in the film which made it hard to interpret the scenes and the abstract screenplay.
