For audiences, a movie is primarily a source of entertainment. However, many great films, while not overtly entertaining, have managed to inspire viewers and connoisseurs of cinema to reflect on the deeper ideas of entertainment or wisdom they convey. Considering this perspective, Sreeraj Sreenivasan’s Pravinkoodu Shappu, starring Soubin Shahir and Basil Joseph, despite being crafted with good intentions, falters in its execution, failing to resonate effectively with its audience. The movie had a good story and a good cast, but falters in the second half as the direction and the screenplay seem completely scattered.
But there are some notable exceptions in Pravinkoodu Shappu, even in the haphazard journey of an eccentric police officer’s outing in a remote village to find a killer. The exceptional delivery of Basil Joseph as a young police officer, who is steadfast in finding the culprit who murdered the owner of Pravinkoodu Shappu, is one of the major highlights of the movie.

Basil, who is adept in presenting witty and humorous scenes with simple and silly dialogues, shines in this movie as well. Soubin Shahir and Chandini Sreedharan have also been excellent as husband and wife. Though Basil’s character arc is majorly centered around wit Soubin’s brings in a different level of seriousness to a toddy shop worker-magician-man with vengeance character.

Another element the movie has successfully used is the visual imagery and the dialogues. Though the dialogues go into the sleazy mode and mere men gaze in some moments, the writer was able to inculcate factors from the situational conversations from a typical Kerala village. Shyju Khalid’s camera is full of warm, earthy palettes with rich, vibrant hues capturing the beauty of a village, which is central to the story of Pravinkoodu Shappu. Along with the cinematography, another high point of the movie is the music by Vishnu Vijay.

The movie has a smooth run as the story develops in the first half, but fails to meet the expectations in the second half. The non-linear approach and perfect editing enhance the visual experience in the first half.
Timeline Verdict: Sreeraj Sreenivasan, in his debut as a director with Pravinkoodu Shappu, tried to do something good with a story purely based out of conversations and exchanges in a village, but these good intentions failed to meet the target as the execution falters.
