Cherukuri Ramoji Rao, the founder of Ramoji Film City and head of Telugu news and entertainment network ETV died at the age of 87. He was undergoing treatment at Star Hospital in Hyderabad at the time of death. Ramoji was taken to the hospital on June 5 due to high blood pressure and breathlessness.

His mortal remains have been shifted to his residence in Ramoji Film City. Prominent political figures and film personalities are expected to arrive today.

At the news of his death PM designate Narendra Modi expressed his condolences. Taking to his X (formerly twitter), he said Ramoji was “visionary” who revolutionized Indian media. He said, “The passing away of Shri Ramoji Rao Garu is extremely saddening. He was a visionary who revolutionized Indian media. His rich contributions have left an indelible mark on journalism and the world of films. Through his noteworthy efforts, he set new standards for innovation and excellence in the media and entertainment world. Ramoji Rao Garu was extremely passionate about India’s development…”

President Droupadi Murmu also expressed her condolences. She called Ramoji a “titan of the media and entertainment sector”.

 

Congress leader Rahul Gandhi called him “prioneering figure in the Indian media industry”.

 

Telangana Chief Minister, Revanth Reddy said that, “without Ramoji Rao, the Telugu press and media sector will never be able to fill the gap”. He said, “Without Ramoji Rao, the Telugu press and media sector will never be able to fill the gap. Praying to God to rest his soul in peace… My deepest condolences to the family members”.

 

Chandrababu Naidu, Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister designate, called Ramoji’s death a “great loss”, not only for the Telugu people, but also for the whole country. “His death is a great loss not only for the Telugu people….for the country as well… He was a pinnacle in the field of media. I was associated with Sri Ramoji Rao for four decades. His way of saying good is good and bad is bad… brought me closer to him”, he wrote.

 

Ramoji Rao was a businessman, media entrepreneur, and film producer. He was the head of Ramoji Group, which owns the world’s largest film production facility, Ramoji Film City. The group also owns Eenadu newspaper, ETV Network, Usha Kiran Movies.

He won National Film Award for Best Feature Film In Telugu (producer), Nuvve Kavali. He was honoured by the Government of India with Padma Vibhushan, the second highest award of the Republic of India, in 2019.
