Arjun Reddy fame Shalini Pandey recently opened up about shooting the “charan seva” rape scene in her recent Netflix release Maharaj. In the movie scene, her character name Kishori is forced to engage in sex with the self-styled godman Maharaj, played by Jaideep Ahlawat. She said that performing the rape scene made her extremely anxious.

“When I actually did that scene with the Maharaj, the ‘charan seva’ scene… till the time I actually did it, I did not realise what impact it had on me because I did the scene and suddenly, I went out and I told my team I don’t want to be in a closed room, I need time, I need some fresh air, I am getting a little anxious,” she said in an interview with Bollywood Hungama.

The actress then added that she felt her character was a stupid woman at first, but then realised it was her character’s conditioning made her believe everything she was doing.

The movie Maharaj is helmed by Siddharth P Malhotra, and produced by Aditya Chopra under the banner of Yash Raj Films (YRF). It marks the debut of Junaid Khan, son of Bollywood superstar, Aamir Khan.
The film is based on the 1862 Maharaj libel case, one of the few legal battles that had great impact in India’s history. The case has caused quite a controversy and became the landmark case in the record of Indian judiciary, and freedom of press in the country.
