The re-release of the folk-horror Tumbbad has created waves once again, with the Sohum Shah-starrer earning a box office collection of Rs 1.65 crore on its first day, roughly three times its original opening in 2018.

Directed by Rahi Anil Barve and produced under Shah’s production banner Sohum Shah Films, Tumbbad received critical acclaim when it hit theatres first on October 12, 2018. The atmospheric horror drama has surpassed the opening day numbers of Kareena Kapoor Khan’s The Buckingham Murders, which earned nearly Rs 1.15 crore.

The film has reportedly surpassed the first day collections of Sholay, Mughal-e-Azam, and Rockstar upon their re-release.

Trade expert Taran Adarsh shared the first day collection of the film, “When Tumbbad first hit theatres in 2018, it had collected 65 lakhs on Friday, 1.15 cr on Saturday, and 1.45 cr on Sunday. In a remarkable twist, the film delivers a big surprise by collecting a significantly higher amount on its *re-release* Friday.”

Attributing the success to the critical acclaim the film received, Adarsh added, “The tremendous love and goodwill that Tumbbad has garnered over the years, combined with *affordable* ticket prices, have significantly contributed to its success.”

Shah plays the lead role of Vinayak Rao, who ventures into a search for a hidden 20th century treasure guarded by the dangerous entity Hastar in the village of Tumbadd in Maharashtra. The film follows Rao’s fall as greed and obsession take over him as he continues his quest. On Saturday, Shah announced a sequel to Tumbadd, a much-awaited demand from fans.

Tumbbad is the latest film to join the re-release trend. Some of the previous films from the Hindi film industry that hit theatres again include Imtiaz Ali’s Rockstar (2011) and his brother and director Sajid Ali’s cult film Laila Majnu (2018).
