Veteran Tamil actor and comedian Madan Bob, known for his impeccable comic timing, expressive reactions, and infectious screen presence, died at his residence in Adyar, Chennai, on August 2, after prolonged health complications.

He was 71. A source close to the family confirmed that the actor had been battling cancer and had been under medical care for an extended period. He is survived by his wife Susheela, daughter Janani, and son Arsheed.

Born as Krishnamurthy, Madan Bob’s journey from a background in music to becoming a household name in Tamil cinema is nothing short of inspiring.

An accomplished guitarist and keyboard player, he began his artistic career in the world of music, even composing for Doordarshan in the early days. His entry into cinema was guided by the legendary K. Balachander, and he made his film debut as a keyboard artist in Vaaya Kettai.

But it was comedy that eventually became his enduring identity.

In a career spanning over four decades, Madan Bob acted in over 200 films, bringing to life characters that often provided the much-needed comic relief in intense dramas. Whether as the bumbling uncle, the sarcastic friend, or the wide-eyed sidekick, his performances were always memorable.

His most celebrated appearances include Vaaname Ellai, Thevar Magan, Poove Unakkaga, Friends, Tenali, Sathi Leelavathi, Run, Varalaru, Vel, Vasool Raja MBBS, and Chandramukhi. His expressive face and animated body language became his signature style, often evoking laughter with just a glance or a well-timed pause.

He was a rare actor who could stand alongside superstars like Rajinikanth, Kamal Haasan, Vijay, Ajith Kumar, and Suriya, yet never be overshadowed. His presence, even in supporting roles, was a promise of joy.

While his filmography is extensive, Madan Bob also carved a distinct identity on television, especially as a judge on the immensely popular Sun TV comedy show Asatha Povathu Yaaru. His enthusiastic reactions, often exaggerated for comic effect, made him an audience favourite. Generations of viewers grew up watching his amused expressions, contagious laughter, and fatherly encouragement to budding comedians.

He brought the same warmth and wit to every episode, making the show a launchpad for many aspiring comedy artists. His role on television helped him connect with younger audiences and added to his legacy beyond cinema halls.

Not many knew that Madan Bob was also a boxer in his youth, showcasing a lesser-known but fascinating aspect of his early life. He was not only a multi-talented performer but also someone with an unrelenting spirit.

Oscar-winning composer A.R. Rahman had worked with Madan Bob during his early days in the industry, underlining Bob’s long-standing influence in the Tamil music scene as well.
