Crossing boundaries, Vijay Sethupathi’s action thriller Maharaja has been making waves in the Chinese box office since its release. Nearly after a week of its release, the film has collected impressive numbers and etched its history in the foreign land. So, let’s check the performance of the film in its first week in China.
Nithilan Saminathan’s directorial film, released in China on November 29, completed its first week successfully by grossing Rs 41 crores. Marching towards the second week, the film has already become the highest-grossing Tamil movie on the mainland.

Notably, with a fantastic first-week record, Maharaja is now the highest-grossing Indian movie in China since the release of Thugs of Hindostan in November 2018. Aamir Khan’s period action film collected Rs 65 crores at the Chinese box office, which boosted its overall collection to Rs 335 crores. It also surpasses the records of Rajinikanth 2.O, which collected Rs 22 crores in China.
Compared to the overall records, Vijay Sethupathi’s action thriller is the 13th biggest Indian grosser in China. Notably, the film also earned an 8.6 rating among the Chinese reviews and is regarded as one of the highest-rated Indian films in recent years, as per Sacnilk.
With this impressive performance in theatres, the worldwide collection of the film is nearing Rs 150 crores, which is expected to be achieved on its second week run. The film stars Vijay Sethupathi, Anurag Kashyap, Mamta Mohandas, Natarajan Subramaniam, Abhirami, Aruldoss, Munishkanth, Manikandan, Singampuli, Bharathiraja, and Vinod Sagar, PL Thenappan.

The film is a special one in actor Vijay Sethupathi’s career. Maharaja turned out to be the 50th film of the actor. To make things special, the film also joined the Rs 100 crore club in India and earned a total of Rs 110 crore at the box office. Ending its theatrical run with a history in its collection, the film reached the OTT platform on 12 July 2024.
Interestingly, Maharaja received the glory of being the most-watched Indian film on Netflix in 2024, on its OTT release.
