Thalapathy Vijay’s penultimate film, GOAT, or The Greatest of All Time, hit theatres today, and fans made sure to hit the early morning shows to not miss this action-packed fun ride.

Indian Express called the film as director Venkat Prabhu’s “boldest” yet after Mankatha, specifically in terms of content and technical prowess. While the de-ageing does work in favour at certain areas, such as showing Jeevan (the younger Vijay), it falls flat when the other de-aged Vijay in his teens appears, points out the Indian Express.

Critics hail Venkat Prabhu for his writing, which successfully captures action, comedy, drama, and the essence of family while presenting Vijay in a different and refreshing light compared to his previous few outings. The Hindustan Times highlights the performance delivered by Vijay, with his double role of the father and son (two very different characters), which helps the actor stand out from his previous works.

The Hindustan Times also praises the director’s cousin and the music composer of the film, Yuvan Shankar Raja, for his BGM and the remixing of old Ilayarajaa songs.

While the film misses here and there, the performance by an experienced cast shines through. “But what truly works for the film is the Old Guard standing tall. Be it Prashanth, Sneha, Prabhu Deva, Laila, and of course, Vijay, everyone brings their A-game,” observes the Indian Express.

Praising Vijay, the review also emphasised that, letting down the “baggage of being a superstar,” the actor delivers a fine performance in this action-packed flick.

The overall verdict by critics seems to be unanimous: Despite the mass moments garnished throughout the film and the many references to Vijay and his films (Venkat Prabhu is a huge Vijay fan), the film delivers, and so does Thalapathy Vijay.
