Venkat Prabhu, a man who is known for his versatility has created nearly 40 films. Entry Into The Cinematic Universe
The GOAT director has had roots in cinema long before his official entry into it. He belongs to a legendary family established in Kollywood. He is the son of the veteran director turned music director, Gangai Amaran. His uncle is the music maestro Ilayaraaja and his cousins are the music composers Yuvan Shankar Raja, Karthik Raja, and singer Bhavatharini.
Stepping into the cine industry as a playback singer, soon Venkat and his cousin duo formed a band called Next Generation. Even though he began his acting career as a supporting actor in celebrated films like April Mathathil, Ji, Sivakasi, and more, it didn’t help him stand out.
In The Spotlight Of Kollywood
The spotlight of Kollywood finally shone on him with his sports comedy venture Chennai 600028. The film was soon recognized as a cult classic which revolves around street cricket, with its players being portrayed by 11 newcomers, including his brother Premgi. Thus, he established himself in cinema.

His next creation Saroja (2008), was also one of the films which continues to be the talk of the town in Kollywood. He eventually became the “thug” of Kollywood directing the 50th film of Thala Ajith’s Mankatha (2011). The story revolves around the heist of cricket betting money and a gang of four thieves, which made its blast in theaters. Moreover, the film made the second biggest opening of all time for a Tamil film, after Enthiran, at the time of release.
He also directed movies like Biriyani and Mass Engira Massillamani which received critical acclaim. His film Manaadu, starring STR, was widely celebrated by the fans. It also garnered Rs 117 crores at the box office. Moreover, he also acted with the two major heroes of Kollywood- Thalapathy Vijay in Sivakasi and Thala Ajith ji.

Director’s Freedom In Filmmaking
But his latest Telugu release Custody, failed to imprint its mark at the box office and collected just around Rs 15.85 crores in its theatrical run. Analyzing the reason for its downfall, the director stated that his story was manipulated and lost its core while converting it into a Telugu commercial. He also highlighted that the freedom of the director is an important factor in bringing out a good film.
Venkat Prabhu’s Love For Cricket
If you know the director, you might also know that his movies always have references to cricket and his brother Premji in them, just as the sprinkles of his love for cricket. Interestingly, cricket is his medicine to cure writer’s block as well. The director used to play cricket with his gang whenever he was facing difficulties in writing the story.
