166 People Die From Record-Breaking Heat In UP

The heatwaves in India are considered ‘severe’ as the temperature has neared 50 degrees Celsius in most of the northern part of India. The heat wave condition in Uttar Pradesh intensified with Jhansi, Agra and Lucknow experiencing record-breaking temperatures in recent days.

As per a regional news portal report, the heat condition resulted in the death of 166 people in the state on Thursday. Bulandshahr recorded the highest temperatures at 48 degrees Celsius. It was in 1978 when the district was last recorded at 48.2 degrees Celsius. Similar conditions prevail in the city of Kashi and the state capital Lucknow. As per the senior meteorologist of the Regional Meteorological Centre, Atul Kumar Singh, Varanasi has never experienced the now-recorded high temperature since 1952. On Thursday, the temperature recorded in Varanasi was 32.5 degrees.

Similarly, for the first time, the minimum temperature to be recorded in the city of Prayagraj was 34.2 degrees.

Due to the heavy heat stroke in the state, 47 people were reported to be dead in the cities of Bundelkhand and central UP. 72 lost their lives in Varanasi, 11 from Prayagraj, 9 from Kaushambi, 1 in Pratapgarh and 3 from Gorakhpur were reported to have lost their lives due to the heavy heat. Each person from Shrivasti and Gonda, 4 from Ghaziabad, 3 from Agra and one each from Rampur, Lakhimpur Kheri, Pilibhit and Shahjahanpur also were reported dead.

As per the latest meteorological data, there are chances of showers in different parts of the state. However, a heat wave warning is also issued in Uttar Pradesh. Meanwhile, there is a significant drop in the temperature in Jhansi which recorded 49 degrees before has now reached 47.4 degrees.

Amidst the heat wave, frequent power cuts in the area have angered the natives which led to agitations in different parts on Thursday.
