First Successful Bilateral Hand Transplant In Delhi: Beacon Of Hope In A Painter's Life

The national capital witnessed successful bilateral hand transplant. In a significant medical development, a Delhi painter who lost both hands in a train accident was able to hold brush again. Appreciations galore for the surgical excellence of a group of Delhi doctors and the organ donation pledge made by Meena Mehta.

The 45-year-old painter had lost both his hands in a train accident in 2020. Coming from an underprivileged background, post the accident, the career and life of the painter has reached a standstill. However, Meena Mehta”s organ donation pledge came as a lifesaver for the painter. Meena Mehta, who served as an administrative head of a prominent South Delhi school, during her lifetime had pledged her organs to be used after her death. Hence, when she declared brain-dead, her decision to donate organs gave new lease of life to the painter. Besides, her kidney, liver and corneas have changed the life of three others as well.

The efforts and dedication of the medical team behind the meticulous act need to be emphasised. The surgery took over 12 hours and it involved connecting every artery, muscle, tendon and nerve between the donor”s hands and the recipient”s arms. The painter will be discharged from the Sir Ganga Ram Hospital tomorrow.

The expertise and dedication of the medical team really did paid well. Along with this, the transplant also underlines the importance of organ donation.
