Govt Launches Cashless Medical Care For Road Accident Victims: Rs 1.5 Lakh Treatment For 7 Days, 10-Minute Ambulance

New Delhi: Union Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari on Wednesday, December 17, said in Rajya Sabha that the road accident victims across the country will now be eligible for cashless medical treatment of up to Rs 1.5 lakh for the first seven days of hospitalisation.

The minister said that the government has expanded the scheme, and it would be rolled out nationwide with support from state governments. The Union Government would facilitate he payments directly to hospitals.

With the scheme, the accident victims are not made to arrange the money during the crucial early phase of treatment. The Minister said that  initiative is designed to ensure immediate medical attention during the initial emergency period.

Victims will be entitled to cashless care of up to Rs 1.5 lakh per person per accident for the initial seven days of hospitalisation, eliminating upfront costs that frequently delay treatment, especially for those without insurance.

Timely medical intervention alone could avoid almost 50,000 road accident deaths every year in India, Gadkari pointed out, citing a study by Indian Medical Association (IMA).
