
Malappuram: Nipah Virus Confirmed In VaIlanchery Native
Malappuram, Kerala: Health officials on Thursday confirmed that Kerala reported fresh Nipah virus outbreak in Malappuram district. The patient, a 42-year-old woman from Valanchery, had been under observation in a hospital at Pattambi in Perinthalmanna. The infection was confirmed by Pune virology lab test, as per reports by local media.
The patient is reported to be in critical condition, and has been undergoing treatment on on ventilator support at the private hospital.

In September last year, the district had witnessed Nipah outbreak, which claimed a 24-year-old. The incident forced authorities to impose strict containment measures, sparking worry among locals.
Considered very serious due to its high mortality rate – approximately 40% to 75% -, the virus inflects severe neurological damages like encephalitis (inflammation of the brain), seizures, and coma, potentially leading to long-term neurological deficits in the victims.

Nipah virus is transmitted through human contact with infected animals such as bats, pigs. The virus gets infected through body fluid and contaminated food such as raw date palm sap or fruit.
