'Silent Killer': Diabetes Accounts For One In Six Deaths In Kerala, Says Report
Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala: Diabetes has become an alarming cause of concern in Kerala as the disease accounts for one sixth of the state’s total deaths. According to a report by The New Indian Express, diabetes is responsible for nearly one in six (16.36%) medically certified deaths in 2024.
The number of deaths caused by diabetes was just one in ten a decade ago, the report pointed out, raising alarm about the potential life-threatening nature and spread of the disease, which often gets overlooked by the common people.

Generally called a silent killer, the disease causes fatal complications such as kidney failure, heart disease, and stroke, according to the Medical Certification of Cause of Death (MCCD) 2024 report. Most of the diabetes deaths occur among elderly people aged 70 or above, with men being the proportionally larger victims, accounting for 57% of fatalities.
The finding has elaborated how diabetes causes severe harm to human body. Although the disease does not act alone, it dominates the endocrine, nutritional and metabolic diseases category, accounting for 89.18% of deaths in this group, while also triggering serious secondary complications.

Thus, diabetes have become a leading cause of death in Kerala.
