'Neither New Nor Pandemic': Kochi Chapter Of Indian Medical Association Amid HMPV Outbreak

Kochi, Kerala: Amid reports of an increasing number of Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV) cases, the Kochi Chapter Of the Indian Medical Association on Wednesday addressed a press meeting, stating that the HMPV is neither a new virus nor a pandemic.

The virus belongs to a seasonal virus, unlike the propagation that a new virus-like COVID-19 has emerged in the world. The visuals from China and the ones that are being circulated among people are the ones which panicked people, the doctors said, reports The New Indian Express.

Multiple cases have been detected in India, causing panic and fear of another pandemic like situation in India. The common symptoms of HMPV are fever, fatigue, coughing, congestion and difficulty in breathing.

A common respiratory virus that typically causes mild cold-like symptoms. the HMPV circulated in human populations since the 1970s, though it was first identified by scientists in 2001.

The virus cases usually peaks between November and May, and most adults have developed immunity through previous exposure. Despite the mild nature and seasonal disease, the footages from China showing patients wearing masks, has brought fear, allegedly fueled by the media.
