“Poor, Dying Can Wait, Because…”: Protests Over Half-Day Closure Of AIIMS On January 22

Poor, Dying Can Wait Because Priority Is To Modi’s Desperation For Cameras, PR: Trinamool Congress Leader On Half-Day Closure Of AIIMS On January 22

Trinamool Congress (TMC) MP Saket Gokhale took to social media platform X (formerly Twitter), attacking the Prime Minister of India Narendra Modi and the All-India Institutes of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) for the recently issued circular by AIIMS, one of India’s largest Government Hospital, declaring its closure on the Ram temple consecration day on January 22 (Monday). Noting the situation of the sick patients waiting outside the hospital, he said that the poor and dying can only wait because the priority is given to Modi’s desperation for cameras and public relations.

“India’s largest Govt Hospital AIIMS Delhi will remain closed till 2:30 pm on Monday. There are literally people sleeping outside in the cold at AIIMS gates waiting for an appointment. The poor & dying can wait because priority is given to Modi’s desperation for cameras & PR,” Saket Gokhale wrote in his X post.

The memorandum issued by AIIMS cited the Government of India’s decision of a half-day closure on January 22. “The Government of India has declared Monday the 22nd January 2024 half day closing till 14:30 Hrs vide O.M. ref: F.No.12/7/2023- JCA, DoPT dated 18th January 2024 as Ram Lalla Pram Pratistha at Ayodhya will be celebrated across India. It is notified for information of all the employees that the institute will remain half day closed till 14:30 hrs on 22.01.2024. All chiefs of centres, heads of the departments, units and branch officers are requested to bring this to the notice of all staff working under them,” the order reads.

The Delhi government had announced today the closure of the government offices on January 22 to observe the Ram temple consecration festivities.
