Milestone: Russia Says It Developed Cancer Vaccine; To Be Distributed Free Of Cost

Moscow, Russia: As the world is yet to make a robust progress in discovering a cure for the deadly cancer disease, the Russian Health Ministry recently announced that it has developed a cancer vaccine. Probably, a relief to millions of people if the vaccine is successful, the country said that it would be distributed free of charge to patients during the initial months of 2025.

Strikingly, the vaccine’s primary use is to treat cancer patients rather than preventing the disease, which has been perceived to be one of the milestone leap in the cancer research in the world.

The big announcement was made by Andrey Kaprin, General Director, Radiology Medical Research Centre of the Russian Ministry of Health.  Russia has developed its own mRNA vaccine against cancer and that it would be provided free of cost for its citizens, Russian news agency TASS reported as Kaprin has said.

The vaccine was developed in collaboration with several research centers, and the public circulation of the product would be made in early 2025. Alexander Gintsburg, director of the Gamaleya National Research Center for Epidemiology and Microbiology, said that the vaccines’ preclinical trials had shown positive results, including overcoming tumor development and potential metastases.

There were reports earlier that President Vladimir Putin had said that the scientists were close to finding a vaccine for cancer. There is no additional information about the type of cancer that vaccines are supposed to cure. Countries across the world are also exploring ways to treat one of the deadly diseases, which has been killing millions of lives each year across the world. As per the World Health Organization, cancer is a leading cause of death worldwide, accounting for nearly 10 million deaths in 2020, suggesting the cause of one in six deaths as the deadly disease.

The British government has signed a contract with a German-based BioNTech company to develop personalized cancer treatments, and pharmaceutical companies Moderna and Merck & Co. are also on the venture of developing experimental cancer vaccines.
