New findings, reports, studies, and experiences from doctors and healthcare experts have always been hot topics among ordinary folks. Few such golden lessons have been shared by an experienced doctor during the launch of his book titled Own Your Body: A Doctor’s Life-Saving Tips, recently. The book has been authored by Dr Shiv Sarin.
The book contains 21 stories of persons diagnosed with various diseases, especially those who suddenly developed sickness without warnings. The doctor says when people know they are diagnosed with a particular disease, they are surprised, asking, “Why this to me?”

Stating that people are unaware of their illnesses, the doctor says the book targets individuals to understand their bodies and potential vulnerabilities, make them aware of possible health risks, and thus take precautions to prevent unwanted development.
Dr. Shiv Sarin observes that the inheritance is true. Every individual inherits a tree of illnesses and diseases in the family, adding that there are high chances of inheriting diseases and illnesses that your parents have. The doctor opines that people are born into three types: one is the red lane, wherein parents are unhealthy and the child is also unhealthy; the two is the yellow lane, which means the parents are unhealthy but the child is healthy; the three is the green lane, where parents are healthy and the child is also healthy.
Through his book, Dr. Shiv aims to convert those in red to yellow, those in yellow to green, and the ones in green to remain in green, noting that every child has the right to be born healthy. The book claims to have tried and tested life-saving tips with over 300 references from journalists supporting them.
It is recommended that knowing the body is the first step towards understanding the body and realising that your body is your responsibility. Weight management, according to the doctor, is crucial to prevent disease and promote health. According to him, the ideal weight of a man would be the height (in centimetres) minus a hundred. For women, their weight should be height minus 105 due to their genetically higher. For individuals whose parents have diabetes or high blood pressure, the ideal weight, in that case, for men would be height minus 105 and for women, height minus 110.
The doctor advises following a healthy lifestyle instead of resorting to the medicine. Getting seven hours of restorative sleep, staying slim and fit, and having the knowledge of what to eat when and how is paramount, “When none of these work, only then resort to medicine,” he suggests.
However, the doctor also cautions against indulging in self-medication. To avoid the harmful consequences of self-medication, the doctor stresses the importance of having family doctors. Since they have known individuals since childhood, family doctors are required, so people don’t have to rush to specialists for small things.
