A 24-year-old woman was stabbed to death by her former classmate outside her college in Karnataka”s Hubballi on Thursday. Neha Hiremath, the daughter of Congress corporator Niranjan Hiremath, was allegedly killed by Fayaz, outside the college. College authorities and students rushed her to the hospital, but Neha died of her injuries on the way.
Neha, a first-year MCA student at KLE Technological University, where the stabbing took place, was declared dead upon arrival at Kempegowda Institute of Medical Sciences (KIMS) Hospital.
Fayaz, who hails from Savadatti in Belagavi district, was arrested within hours with the help of the CCTV footage. Further investigation is underway.
The police said that Fayaz and Neha were pursuing a BCA degree at KLE Technological University. Neha began to avoid Fayaz when he tried to initiate a romantic relationship with her. Neha”s parents also intervened and warned Fayaz to stay away from her. Neha even stopped going to college temporarily.
Renuka Sukumar, Hubballi-Dharwad Commissioner of Police said, “We have arrested the suspect and will begin interrogation to gather further information. Initial reports suggest that the victim and the accused knew each other and studied together, as corroborated by other students. More details will emerge following the interrogation process. Our team has taken all necessary precautions. Despite the accused fleeing the crime scene, our quick response led to his capture within one hour of the incident. Our officers acted swiftly and decisively. The suspect will be presented in court soon. We remain vigilant regarding any developments and are fully prepared to handle the situation.”
A group of students, led by the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP), protested outside KLE Technological University, demanding severe punishment for the accused. On Thursday night, members of some Hindutva organisations also gathered outside the Vidyanagar Police Station demanding the custody of the accused. They also urged lawyers in the city to abstain from representing the accused in court, The News Minute reported.
