Three people have been arrested in connection with the alleged gang rape of a second-year MBBS student from Odisha near a private medical college in Durgapur, West Bengal, officials said on Saturday. The arrested accused are residents, though their identities have not yet been revealed, according to NDTV.
The 23-year-old survivor, a student at IQ City Medical College in Durgapur’s Shivapur area, had reportedly gone out with a male friend on Friday night when a group of men accosted them near the college gate. The men allegedly took her to a secluded area about a kilometre away and raped her before fleeing the scene, according to NDTV.

Police have registered a case under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code dealing with gang rape and common criminal intent. Several suspects, including the survivor’s male friend, are being interrogated, officials said.
The woman’s statement has been recorded, and her condition is stated to be stable. She is currently undergoing treatment at a hospital in Durgapur, where she is said to be “recovering well,” NDTV reported.
According to the survivor’s family, her friend may have been involved in the crime. They alleged that he misled her and took her to a deserted location under false pretences before she was assaulted. The complaint also mentioned that the accused took away the woman’s phone and Rs 5,000 in cash.

National Commission for Women (NCW) member Archana Majumdar met the survivor at the hospital and discussed the progress of the investigation.
She said the friend accompanying the student was “under the scanner” and urged police to examine his role closely. “He insisted she go out with him and left her behind when the incident happened. Police need to probe this angle thoroughly,” Majumdar told NDTV.
The case has sparked political reactions in both West Bengal and Odisha. BJP leader Amit Malviya criticised the Mamata Banerjee-led government, alleging repeated failures in ensuring women’s safety.
He demanded a “transparent and impartial” investigation and said West Bengal had become unsafe for women. “Until the TMC government is held accountable, women across the state will continue to live in fear,” he said.
Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi condemned the incident, calling it “highly painful and shocking.” He urged Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee to ensure exemplary punishment for the accused and said his government was in touch with West Bengal officials to provide assistance to the survivor’s family. “All possible help will be extended to the victim and her family,” Majhi said in a post on X.
