As the Iconic Radio presenter Ameen Sayani died at 91 today, here is a glance at his unique legacy and celebrated career that won the hearts of millions of listeners. After experiencing a heart attack on Tuesday night, he was taken to the hospital and died from there. Many dignitaries including the Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed grief on the departure of the Ameen. The prime minister noted his iconic voice and its reflection across generations while highlighting the bond he created with his Indian listeners.

“Shri Ameen Sayani Ji’s golden voice on the airwaves had a charm and warmth that endeared him to people across generations. Through his work, he played an important role in revolutionising Indian broadcasting and nurtured a very special bond with his listeners. Saddened by his passing away. Condolences to his family, admirers and all radio lovers. May his soul rest in peace,” the Prime minister wrote on his social media platform X (formerly Twitter).

Born in Mumbai, Ameen grew up with an interest in creativity and languages. He began writing at the age of 13 publishing his mother’s fortnightly journal “Rehbar” But Ameen became famous after he entered into the radio shows, falling people for his iconic voice that still could evoke nostalgic feelings among significant chunks of the population.

At a time when radio programs began to be popular, Sayani was selected to be the host of the “Binaca Geetmala” program in 1952. Since then, he began to arrest the listeners’’ attention, with Mr Ameen remaining as the program’s face till 1994. The long 42 years gave him massive popularity. He produced more than 54,000 radio programs and 19,000 spots/jingles across All India Radio. He has also been part of many movies.

The ‘Geetmala’ program dragged him into huge popularity, making it one of the most watched programs across the nation. His listeners addressing style as “Behno aur Bhaiyo” (sisters and brothers) had imprinted in millions of hearts, giving him a unique character.

However, as one of the most talked about names in Indian society, Mr Ameen entered each household, creating a long legacy in the radio, the most popular media back then.
