Delhi Minister Atishi has threatened to go on an indefinite hunger strike if the water crisis in the national capital is not resolved. The Water Minister said that she had written to Prime Minister Narendra Modi over the water crisis in the city.
“I have written to Prime Minister Narendra Modi over the water crisis requesting him to resolve the issue. If the crisis is not solved within two days, I will go on an indefinite strike from June 21,” Atishi said during a press conference on Wednesday.
The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader claimed that Delhi has a water crisis because Haryana is not releasing the capital city’s share.
“Yesterday, Haryana released 513 MGD (million gallons per day) of water to Delhi as against 613 MGD. One MGD of water is for 28,500 people. This means that water was not released for over 28 lakh people,” she said.
Atishi said that she has written multiple letters to the Haryana government to address the issue, but to no avail.
The BJP, on the other hand, slammed the ruling AAP government in the city for failing to provide water to the people of Delhi.
“Atishi has now stooped to theatrics to divert attention from theft and black marketing of water. Haryana provided surplus water to Delhi yesterday and there are official documents to prove it, but she is now resorting to drama. This government should be sacked,” Delhi BJP president Virendra Sachdeva said.
Haryana Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini on Monday accused the Delhi government of neglect and mismanagement claiming that Haryana is giving adequate amount of water to the national capital.
“We are providing them sufficient water. First, the AAP government should do some introspection on themselves. They are more focused on corruption rather than fulfilling its promises to the public. They should focus on implementing developmental schemes for the public of Delhi rather than doing corruption,” the Haryana CM said.
He also said that since the AAP has been running the government for the last 10 years, they should have worked on the water distribution system instead of blaming others. “We (Haryana) are providing more than sufficient water to them. Delhi’s public is ours too if they suffer, we also suffer. But the way their government lied to the public by not providing any facilities or building an effective system due to corruption, I think Delhi’s public should give a befitting reply to them.”
