The Aam Aadmi Party has once again proved its dominance in the Chandni Chowk constituency of Delhi. AAP’s Punardeep Sawhney has secured a win against the BJP party, bagging a total of 38,993 votes.
Chandni Chowk, one of the most politically significant constituencies of Delhi, witnessed a triangular battle between AAP’s Punardeep Sahni, BJP’s Satish Jain, and Congress’ Mudit Agarwal.
However, Punardeep Sawhney, a municipality councillor and the son of former MLA Prahlad Singh Sawhney, who was fielded to represent the ruling party, emerged victoriously with a margin of 16,572 votes.
AAP has been in power since the 2015 election, when Alka Lamba dethroned the Congress candidate and the then-incumbent MLA Parlad Singh Sawhney. In the last Assembly elections, Parlad Singh Sawhney, who then later joined the AAP party, won by a margin of 29584 votes. The BJP’s Suman Kumar Gupta was the runner-up, securing 21307 votes.
In the 2015 Delhi Assembly elections, Alka Lamba of AAP won in this seat, defeating Suman Kumar Gupta of BJP by a margin of 18,287, which was 24.55% of the total votes cast for the seat. AAP had a vote share of 49.35% in 2015 in this seat.
In the 2013 Delhi Assembly elections, Parlad Singh Sawhney of INC won this seat, defeating Suman Kumar Gupta of BJP by a margin of 8,243, which was 11.82% of the total votes cast for the seat. INC had a vote share of 37.77% in 2013 in this seat.
In the 2008 Delhi Assembly elections, Parlad Singh Sawhney of INC won this seat, defeating Praveen Khandelwal of BJP by a margin of 8,020, which was 12.97% of the total votes cast for the seat. INC had a vote share of 45.61% in 2008 in this seat.
