Dima Hasao, Assam: As the rescue operation to save labourers trapped inside a flooded coal mine in Assam’s Dima Hasao continues, rescuers recovered one body early on Wednesday (January 8). At least nine workers are trapped in the mine and a multiple teams including navy, army, NDRF and SDRF personnel are jointly undertaking the rescue efforts.
In a post on X, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma wrote, “21 Para divers have just recovered a lifeless body from the bottom of the well. Our thoughts and prayers are with the grieving family.”

On Tuesday, Chief Minister said that Dima Hasao said that coal mine in Assam “appears to be illegal”, and added that a case was registered and a person has been arrested in connection with the incident.
“The police have registered an FIR under Umrangso PS Case No: 02/2025, citing Sections 3(5)/105 BNS, r/w Section 21(1) of the Mines and Minerals (Development and Regulation) Act, 1957, to investigate the incident. Prima facie, it appears to be an illegal mine. One Punish Nunisa has been arrested in connection with the case,” Chief Minister said in a post on X.

The trapped labourers were identified as Ganga Bahadur Shreth, Hussain Ali, Jakir Hussain, Sarpa Barman, Mustafa Seikh, Khushi Mohan Rai, Sanjit Sarkar, Lijan Magar and Sarat Goyary.
