In a tragic incident on Monday night, a Brihanmumbai Electric Supply and Transport (BEST) bus lost control in Mumbai’s Kurla (West), leaving at least three people dead and many injured. The accident occurred at around 9:50 PM near the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) L Ward office, as the bus veered off its route and crashed into pedestrians, vehicles, and eventually the gates of a residential complex.
The electric bus, operating on route number 332 from Kurla station to Andheri, reportedly experienced a brake failure, causing the driver to lose control. CCTV footage captured the bus hurtling down the busy road, first colliding with an autorickshaw before striking multiple vehicles and pedestrians.
Eyewitnesses described the horrifying scene, with one resident, Zaid Ahmed, recounting how the bus swerved dangerously for nearly 200 metres before the impact. Ahmed and others rushed to assist the injured, transporting victims to nearby Sion and Kurla Bhabha hospitals.
Authorities have confirmed that the vehicle was a 12-metre-long electric bus recently acquired on a wet lease from a private operator, Olectra. Registered only three months ago, the bus had been operational since August. Officials noted that drivers for leased buses are provided by the private supplier, and further investigations are underway to determine the exact cause of the malfunction.
