Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader Atishi took oath as the youngest Chief Minister of Delhi on Saturday afternoon at the Raj Niwas. The Leitenant General VK Saxena administered the oath of Atishi alongside a new team of Ministers. Five other newly appointed ministers, including Saurabh Bharadwaj, Gopal Rai, Imran Hussain, Kailash Gahlot, and new Sultanpur Majra MLA Mukesh Ahlawat also took oath during the ceremony.

The new chief minister will lead the national capital till the current government’s tenure ends in February 2025. Atishi, the vocal AAP leader, was picked unanimously as the chief minister designate during the AAP Legislature party meeting on Tuesday, following Arvind Kejriwal’s resignation. The AAP supremo’s resignation came after the Supreme Court on September 13 granted bail in the liquor policy case.

Declaring his decision to resign, the AAP chief said he would return to the position only after the people of Delhi gave a certificate of honesty in the assembly election, scheduled for next year. The former chief minister also demanded an early election in the capital city. The election is scheduled to be held in February 2025. Kejriwal is currently involved in the Haryana election campaign, stating that the AAP would be the kingmaker in the neighbouring state.

An Oxford University graduate and Rhodes scholar, Atishi will be the third woman chief minister of Delhi, following Sushma Swaraj and Sheila Dikshit. Started her political career as an advisor in 2015 and then an AAP MLA in 2020, Atishi stepped the political ladder quickly, eventually becoming the chief minister in 2024.
