Srinagar: People’s Democratic Party (PDP) chief Mehbooba Mufti on Friday (March 14, 2025) expressed that some “bigots” have converted Holi festivities into a “source of fear” for minorities with the acceptance of those in power.

Mufti’s remark came a day after she made cautious remarks about the grave repercussions for the country when discord between Hindu and Muslim communities was promoted.

The PDP chief addressed to controversies linked to subsequent timing of Holi festivities and ‘Jumma namaaz’ during Ramzan coinciding on Friday.

Taking to X, Mufti said: “Holi for me has always symbolized India’s Ganga-Jamuna Tehzeeb. I fondly remember eagerly awaiting the festival & celebrating it with my Hindu friends with immense joy & enthusiasm. However some bigots have now converted this celebration into a source of fear for minorities with the approval of those in power. It’s time to wake up India. Wishing everyone a Happy Holi!”

Authorities have implemented increased security measures across cities due to the concurrent timing. Some BJP leaders and officials have advised Muslims to stay indoors if they do not want to be caught in between the holy festivities. Mosques in several districts of Uttar Pradesh were covered with tarpaulin on Thursday.

On Thursday, Mufti attacked Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath for corrupting the atmosphere in the State by creating division between Hindus and Muslims. Earlier people from both countries celebrated Eid together.

“Now, the atmosphere has been vitiated, especially by the UP CM. The kind of behaviour that is being meted out to the Muslims is very wrong. This country is used to be of Ganga-Jamuni tehzeeb and Hindus & Muslims lived together happily. But now, they are spreading poison. The impact would be very bad,” Mufti told the reporters.

PDP President has also compared the situation in India to events in Pakistan under the rule of former President Zia-ul-Haq, stating that communal tensions created during that time still affecting the country today.
