BJP Expels Perpetrators In The IIT-BHU Molestation Incident

In connection with the molestation of an IIT-BHU student, BJP has expelled three of its workers, the party”s district chief, Hansraj Vishwakarma, said on Sunday. The accused identified as Kunal Pandey, Anand alias Abhishek Chauhan, and Saksham Patel, were arrested by the Varanasi Police on Sunday. Kunal Pandey and Saksham Patel were members of BJP IT cell Varanasi, journalist and fact-checker Mohammed Zubair tweeted.

The BJP took the decision when Opposition claimed that accused where linked to the party; however, the party have not revealed the titles and role they held in the party.

“Definitely their (accused) names have appeared in the police probe, so they will be expelled from the party after an investigation,” India Today quotes as Vishwakarma saying.

When asked whether BJP has distanced itself from the perpetrators, the district chief said: “It is not about distancing from the accused. They will be expelled from the party,” India Today quotes as he is saying.

He added that as per the directions of the party leadership further action will be taken. The accused were produced before a local court and sent them to judicial custody to 14 days.

The incident is said to have transpired on the night of November 1, when, as per the complainant, she was forcibly taken to a secluded area on a motorcycle by the three accused. The victim alleges that the perpetrators separated her from her friend, and, after reaching a corner, proceeded to assault and gag her. The arrests were made by the in-charge of Lanka police station, Shivakant Mishra.

The incident resulted eruption of protests at the IIT BHU campus and hundreds of students gathered on campus to demand the arrest of the perpetrators.
