Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, responding to the recent violent clash in Sambhal, Uttar Pradesh, has held the BJP-led UP government accountable. The Congress senior leader has also expressed condolences to those who have lost their lives during the firing. “The administration’s insensitive action without listening to all parties further vitiated the situation and resulted in the death of many people – for which the BJP government is directly responsible.”

He further criticized the BJP government for creating a rift between Hindu-Muslim communities and has requested the Supreme Court to intervene in the matter immediately to ensure justice.

“My appeal is to maintain peace and mutual harmony. We all have to join together to ensure that India moves forward on the path of unity and constitution, not communalism and hatred,” the leader of the Opposition concluded.

Rahul’s comment came in as the tension rose in Sambhal. Violence erupted when the court ordered a survey of the Mugal-era Jama Masjid following a petition filed by senior advocate Vishnu Shanker Jain, claiming that the mosque was originally a temple.

The unrest began during a court-ordered survey, led by an Advocate Commissioner, to investigate claims that the mosque was built on a demolished Hindu temple. Crowds gathered near the mosque to protest, escalating into stone-pelting and arson. More than ten vehicles were torched as the mob swelled to over a thousand people. The police responded with tear gas, resulting in injuries to over 30 officers.
