Bride In Varanasi Cancels Wedding Over Groom’s Friends’ Inappropriate Comments
A bride in Varanasi named Jyoti Sharma called off her wedding after feeling disrespected by the groom and his friends during the ceremony in October. The incident has since gone viral on social media, sparking debates over dignity, respect, and changing attitudes towards women at traditional Indian weddings.
According to reports, Jyoti Sharma, 23, was all set to tie the knot when a group of the groom’s friends began making objectionable remarks and jokes about the bride’s friends.

Shocked by their behaviour, Jyoti politely requested the groom to intervene and ask his friends to stop. However, instead of taking a stand, the groom reportedly laughed along with them, further humiliating the bride and her family.
Witnesses said Jyoti felt deeply disrespected by the groom’s response and decided to call off the wedding immediately, refusing to proceed with the rituals.

The families initially tried to mediate, but Jyoti remained firm in her decision, stating that “mutual respect is the foundation of any marriage.”
The incident quickly spread across social media platforms, where videos and eyewitness accounts were shared widely. While many people praised Jyoti for taking a bold stand and upholding her self-respect, some others criticised her for overreacting, calling it a “small issue blown out of proportion.”
A section of users on X and Instagram argued that such behaviour is often normalised in Indian wedding culture, where sexist jokes and “harmless teasing” are seen as part of the celebrations.
However, others countered that Jyoti’s decision sends an important message about boundaries, respect, and the need to challenge casual misogyny.
