CAA Implementation: Protests Rises Across Country

Hours after Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) rules were notified by the central government, protests have erupted in different parts of the country. The All Assam Students’s Union (ASSU) and 30 indigenous organisations protested against the implementation by burning copies of the law in various parts of Assam, including Guwahati, Barpeta, Lakhimpur, Nalbari, Dibrugarh, and Tezpur. In addition to it, the 16-party United Opposition Forum, Assam (UOFA) has announced a state-wide shutdown on Tuesday and has planned to carry out other agitational programs in a phased manner.

The AASU advisor Samujjal Bhattacharjya has emphasized that the indigenous people of Assam and the Northeast would never accept the CAA. They have decided to hold torchlight processions in Assam and launch a satyagraha from the following day.

The Asom Jatiya Parishad president Lurinjyoti Gogoi has termed it a ‘black day’ for Assam. The party was born out of the 2019 anti-CAA protests, reports TOI.
Protests have erupted on the Jamila Millia Islamia campus in Delhi, the campus is known to be the epicenter of the anti-CAA protests in 2019-2020. The Delhi police have deployed a large number of personnel to maintain law and order on the campus. As per the PTI report, a group of students under the banner of the Muslim Students Federation (MSF) raised slogans against the Modi government and the Delhi police.

Fraternity, MSF, and NSU(I) student organizations in Delhi”s Jamia Millia Islamia conducted night vigil protests inside the campus hours after the Union government notified rules for the discriminatory Citizenship Amendment Act, CAA.

The Congress-affiliated National Students’ Union of India (NSUI) also opposed the implementation of the Act. The police have beefed up their security around the campus.

However, Jamia’s acting vice-chancellor Eqbal Hussain has said that no protests will be allowed near the campus and the security arrangements are tightened to avoid agitation.

Kerala has also witnessed protests against the implementation of the law on Monday night. Various organizations including DYFI, Youth League Congress, Youth League Welfare party, SDPI, and Fraternity organized protests on Monday.

The Kozhikode Welfare Party protested by burning a copy of the CAA notification. Meanwhile, the Kerala police resorted to a lathi charge on students protesting CAA in Kozhikode. Women students were subjected to lathi charges during the protest organized by the Fraternity Movement outside All India Radia. All India Radio is a Union government institution.

Just weeks after Union Home Minister Amit Shah assured the implementation of the CAA, 2019 before the Lok Sabha polls, the central government notified the CAA-19 rules on Monday. The Youth Congress South Constituency Committee protested by disrupting the train service at the Kozhikode railway station. Meanwhile, the Union Democratic Front (UDF) has called out for a state-wide protest on Tuesday. And the Ruling LDF will hold a protest march on Tuesday demanding the immediate withdrawal of the Act.
