Suicide Rate In Kerala: Study Finds 79% Of Cases Among Men, 21% Among Women

Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala: Across the world, men die of suicide far more than women do in all age groups. As per an estimate, around two-thirds of worldwide suicides are by men. A latest study conducted by Ernakulam district office of the Department of Economics and Statistics has revealed that around 79% of those who committed suicide in Kerala between 2020 and 2023 are men.

The study pointed out that women accounted for only 21 % of suicides. The suicide rate was higher among people from southern Kerala, including in Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, Alappuzha, Pathanamthitta and Kottayam districts, accounting for 41% of the total number of suicides reported between 2020 and 2023.

The research disclosed that among the men, those who took their lives were between the age group of 45 and 60. Notably, among women, those who ended their lives were above 60 years of age.

Strikingly, the rate of suicide cases was found higher among employed persons compared to the rate of suicide among unemployed people. The detailed report has not been released yet, and it will be published by District Collector N.S.K Umesh on Monday, June 30.

The survey was conducted in the wake of rising suicide rates in Kerala. Across the world, the reason for the increased suicide rate among men is said to be communication. While women share their problems, men tend to cover them up, probably due to the societal stigma that men are stronger.
