“They Won’t Let Us Live”: Police Reject Mother’s Claim In Kannur Suicide, Say SDPI Workers Named In Note

Kannur, Kerala: The tragic suicide of 41-year-old Raseena, a native of Kayalode in Kerala’s Kannur district, has taken a new turn as her mother alleged financial extortion by her male friend.

However, police maintain that the suicide note found at the scene directly implicates three Social Democratic Party of India (SDPI) activists in the harassment that led to her death, reported Mathrubhumi News.

The police also revealed that the suicide note was already in their possession when the mother made her public statement. “The narrative being circulated now by the family does not match what the victim herself wrote before her death,” the officer told Mathrubhumi News.

The note also states that the SDPI workers seized her friend’s phone, used its contents to intimidate and blackmail both individuals, and created a situation where Raseena feared she would never be allowed to live peacefully with her friend. Overwhelmed by fear and humiliation, she ended her life, the Police Officer told Mathrubhumi News.

The sequence of events began on June 15, when Raseena was spotted speaking with a male friend, a resident of Mayyil, beside a parked car near the Achankara mosque.

A group of men approached and verbally confronted them. The confrontation allegedly escalated into public humiliation, with the group forcing Raseena to return home and detaining the male friend.

According to reports, the friend was taken to a nearby open field, assaulted, and subjected to a so-called “mob trial” for nearly five hours. His mobile phone and tablet were seized.

Later that evening, he was taken to the local SDPI office in Parampayi, where Raseena’s relatives were summoned. Despite his pleas, the devices were not returned until police intervened.

Raseena was found dead by hanging inside her residence on June 16. A suicide note recovered from the scene proved to be critical in the investigation. In it, Raseena directly named V.C. Mubashir (28), K.A. Faisal (34), and V.K. Rafnas (24), all SDPI workers, as the individuals who had mentally harassed and threatened her.

Based on this note, all three accused were arrested and produced before the Judicial First Class Magistrate Court in Thalassery. They are currently remanded at Thalassery Sub Jail.
