Woman Dies By Suicide After Being Harassed For Talking To A Male Friend, Three SDPI Workers Arrested: Report

Kannur, KeralaA 40-year-old woman from Pinarayi in Kerala’s Kannur district died by suicide after she was publicly harassed and mentally tortured by a group of men for speaking to a male friend in public. The police have arrested three SDPI (Social Democratic Party of India) workers in connection with the incident, reported Mathrubhumi News.

The victim, identified as Raseena of M.C. Manzil in Parampayi, was found hanging inside her home on Tuesday. A suicide note recovered from the scene provided crucial leads, based on which police arrested: V.C. Mubsheer (28) of M.C. Manzil, Parampayi, K.A. Faisal (34) of Kaniyan Valappil, and V.K. Rafnas (24) of Koodathankandi House.

The arrested men were produced before the Judicial First Class Magistrate Court in Thalassery and have been remanded to the Thalassery Sub Jail, as per Mathrubhumi News.

The incident reportedly began around 3 PM on Sunday, near the Achankara mosque in Kayalode, when a group of men approached Raseena as she was seen talking beside a parked car with a male friend, a resident of Mayyil.

After verbally confronting the woman, the group allegedly forced her to return home and then assaulted the young man, forcibly taking him to a nearby open field. The man was detained and subjected to a “mob trial” for nearly five hours, during which the group allegedly seized his mobile phone and tablet, according to Mathrubhumi News.

By around 8:30 PM, the group took him to the local SDPI office in Parampayi, where they reportedly summoned Raseena’s relatives. Despite repeated pleas, they refused to return the confiscated devices. According to sources, the electronic devices were only recovered later by police during the investigation.

The prolonged harassment and humiliation appear to have taken a heavy toll on Raseena. The following day, she was found dead inside her home.

According to Inspector N. Ajeesh Kumar, more individuals may be involved in the case, and further arrests are likely. Sub-Inspector B.S. Bavish has been appointed to lead the investigation, reported Mathrubhumi News.
