CAA: JNU Issues Advisory; Asks Students To Maintain "Peace And Harmony"

The Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) on Monday has published an advisory appealing to its students and urging them to remain “vigilant” and maintain “peace and harmony” on the campus.

“In view of the ongoing students” election process on campus and various events being organised by the student bodies, all stakeholders of the campus are appealed to remain vigilant and contribute to maintaining peace and harmony on campus,” the advisory released on late Monday.

The advisory was issued hours after the Centre issued notification for the implementation of the Citizenship (Amendment) Act (CAA). However, the university did not mention that the advisory was in connection with the CAA notification.

“The administration firmly reiterates its commitment to zero tolerance towards any form of violence or indiscipline on campus and appeals to all stakeholders of the campus to desist from all such activities,” the advisory added.

Following the Centre”s move, nationwide protests erupted at different parts of the country as well as lodging opposition from politicians, civil society activists, and non-BJP state governments.

Delhi”s Jamia Millia Islamia witnessed protests against the Centre”s announcement and the Delhi Police deployed a large number of personnel to maintain law and order on the campus. The security arrangements have been tightened to avoid any kind of agitation on the campus.

During the anti-CAA protests in 2019-20, Jamia university campus was at the focal point of agitation. At the time of protests, police entered the campus to in pursuit of some alleged offenders who had set some buses on fire. Police personnel were under sharp criticicsm for attacking students in the university library on December 15, 2019 and many students were injured in the violence.
