The Crime Investigation Department (CID) probing the molestation charges against Karnataka Chief Minister and BJP veteran BS Yediyurappa filed a chargesheet on Thursday over the alleged sexual assault against a minor.

The CID of Karnataka Police filed the chargesheet under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act, 2012 in a special court.

An FIR was registered against the 81-year-old BJP leader on March 15 based on the complaint filed by a woman who has accused him of sexually assaulting her 17-year-old daughter. The alleged incident took place when the girl and her mother visited the BJP leader at his home in February this year, seeking his help to speed up a probe into a past rape case. Her mother who had filed the complaint against Yediyurappa, died of lung cancer last month.

Her son approached the court seeking the BJP veteran’s arrest. He has told the court that there has been no progress in the investigation even after three months the case has been registered.

A Bengaluru court has earlier issued a non-bailable warrant for the leader’s arrest this month, but the Karnataka High Court halted his arrest.

The leader has been charged with sexual assault under Section 8 of the POCSO Act and Section 354 A of the Penal Code. The charge sheet has been filed ahead of a High Court hearing of a plea filed by the senior BJP leader for cancelling the FIR against him.

Meanwhile, the octogenarian leader has denied the charges and said “people would teach a lesson to those indulging in conspiracies against me”.

Earlier, the CID questioned Yediyurappa for about 3 hours on June 17 in connection with the case.

When the case was back in the news last month, the BJP leaders have accused the ruling Congress of vendetta politics.
