"Dear Sister": Priyanka Gandhi's Heartfelt Note To Vinesh Phogat

Soon after Vinesh Phogat was disqualified from Olympics’ Women’s Freestyle 50kg finals after being overweight, political leaders and sports personalities from different corners of the country pledged their support to her. After addressing her “Dear Sister” in a social media post, Congress General Secretary Priyanka Gandhi told Phagot, “you were our champion and you will always be our champion.”

The Congress general secretary wrote: “I have seen your courage, hard work and dedication. You were fighting for the dreams of millions of girls of the country in the Olympic arena. Your brilliant game has given wings to the dreams of millions of girls who come from small towns, struggle with all the challenges, fight the system, defeat adverse circumstances and aspire to reach big stages. Your brilliant game filled the entire country with pride.”

Adding further she said that the position that Phogat reached through tireless hard work fighting against the challenges was not easy. “This incredible journey of yours has given strength to millions of dreams,” she added.

“In this difficult time, crores of countrymen are standing with you with the same enthusiasm as they were during the entire competition. My sister, do not consider yourself alone and remember that you were our champion and you will always be our champion. I have full faith that you will come back even stronger,” Priyanka Gandhi tweeted.

Vinesh Phogat has been disqualified from the Paris Olympics after being overweight for women’s 50kg gold medal match on Wednesday. The 2022 World Championships bronze medallist became the first-ever Indian woman wrestler to make it to an Olympics final on Tuesday.
