Mohali, Punjab: Health department officials launched an investigation into the unhygienic conditions of a momo and spring roll-producing factory in Punjab’s Mohali after they found a severed head of a dog in a fridge in the unit.

The unit in Mohali’s Mataur village came under scrutiny when a video of the factory surfaced showing extremely unclean circumstances. Following the same, the district health department and municipal corporation raided the units.

During checking, the officials discovered a severed head of a dog, reportedly a pug, in a fridge. They, however, clarified that it was not used in the food being produced at the factory.

The dog’s severed head has been reportedly sent to the Veterinary Department to verify if it was being used in the food products.

The health department has taken samples of decayed and spoilt meat and food material, including spring rolls, momo and sauces, found inside the unit.

The Mohali municipal corporation fined Rs 12,000 to the owner of the factory with an additional Rs 10,000 fine after retrieving a bulk of plastic bags.

“Other than issuing challans, we will also ascertain if such food units have trade licences for such operations in the village area and will take appropriate action against them. The main concern is to save the public from eating unhealthy food,” Municipal Corporation Commissioner Parminder Pal Singh said, as quoted by Hindustan Times.

The factory had been supplying around a quintal of momo and spring rolls every day across Chandigarh, Panchkula, and Kalka for the last two years, according to reports.
