ED Uncovers Rs 888 Crore 'Cash-For-Job Scam' In Tamil Nadu's MAWS Department

Chennai, Tamil Nadu: The Enforcement Directorate (ED)has forwarded a 232-page dossier to Tamil Nadu police, alleging a cash-for-jobs racket in the Municipal Administration and Water Supply Department.

The central probe agency has alleged that the politicians and associates collected Rs 25–35 lakh per post to manipulate 2,538 recruitments, favoring 150 candidates, while displacing thousands of qualified applicants. The agency has also sought a probe against the officials of Anna University which conducted the exams.

The scam is connected to the 2024-2025 hiring for roles like engineers and inspectors. Around 1.12 lakh had applied in early 2024 for the appointment of approximately 2,538 assistant engineers, town planning officers, junior engineers, and sanitary inspectors in the MAWS department.

The fraud was unearthed during a bank fraud investigation involving Minister K.N. Nehru’s brother and involved bribes routed via intermediaries and hawala networks. The ED has urged the police to file an FIR under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act against all those responsible.

The ED has also provided a 232-page dossier with the names of the suspected lynchpins of the alleged scam, detailing their role in it. The dossier reportedly points out the modus operandi of the alleged exam rigging and details of 150 candidates in whose favor the process was manipulated.

Former Tamil Nadu BJP president K Annamalai on Wednesday accused the DMK government of orchestrating the mega Rs 888-crore cash-for-jobs scam alleging corruption. However, the ruling party has dismissed the allegations as politically motivated.
