Engineering Student Dies By Suicide In Coimbatore, Police Probe Suspects Academic Stress

Peelamedu, Coimbatore: A 21-year-old third-year engineering student has taken his own life by jumping off the terrace of a mall at Peelamedu in Coimbatore on Wednesday, April 15. The student, identified as R Steven Clifford George, who hails from Bengaluru, was a B Tech computer science student at a private university in Coimbatore district, Times of India reported.

The deceased student had returned from home on Wednesday to attend his exam. But, instead of going to university, he went to a mall at Peelamedu to watch a movie at a theater on the fourth floor.

After watching the movie, the student came out of the theater, climbed to the terrace of the mall and jumped off the building at around 10 pm. The student died on the spot after sustaining serious injuries during the fall. Soon after the incident, the Peelamedu police reached the scene and recovered the body.

According to a police officer, the student had not been attending the university regularly and had 14 back-papers. The officer noted that the student had been suffering from severe depression and was taking medication for the same, the report added. A postmortem has been carried out and the body has been handed over to the family.

The police have launched a probe by registering an FIR.
