Gujarat Floods Was “A Man-Made Disaster To Celebrate The "Messiah", Says Jignesh Mevani (image: twitter.com/Jignesh Mevani)

Jignesh Mevani, Congress MLA from Vadgam, Gujarat, writes on social media that recent Gujarat floods is a “man-made disaster” which created  to celebrate the “Messiah”, i.e., Prime Minister Narendra Modi. In his detailed post on X, he shares a timeline of recent floods, titling “Chronology of Gujarat Floods.”

The incessant rains in Gujarat and overflowing of river Narmada has caused flood-like situation in parts of the state. Not only low regions are cut off, but many villages were also stranded as rivers overflowed, and “9,600 people were taken into safety and 207 others rescued in five districts,” reports Outlook.

The opposition claims that release of water from the Sardar Sarovar dam (SSD) in the Narmada river causing its overflow caused the floods in Bharuch, Vadodara and Narmada districts. Congress says that despite farmer’s requirements, BJP Government in Gujarat refused to release water from the Dam and saved the overflow for the day, September 17 marking Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Birthday. They accuse that government opened the floodgates of Narmada yesterday without any prior notice and released 18 lakh cusecs of water straight away posing threat and distress to lives of people.

On yesterday, Mevani writes on X: “Over 10,000 people in Narmada, Vadodara and Bharuch district have been evacuated, their lives risked, livelihood and homes destroyed, only to present a God image of one man.”

In today’s post, he added that if water was released in phases few days prior and red alert was issued announcing the incoming of more water the crisis would have averted. But Prime Minister’s birthday celebration was given prominence over misery of thousands of people. “They waited for the PM”s birthday to release the water. Hence, this is not a natural flood but a man-made disaster to celebrate the “Messiah,” he added.

But, Gujarat’s Water Resources Minister Kunvarji Bavaliya rejected the allegation, and said that there was insufficient water in the dam a few days before. “Before the ongoing spell of rain in Madhya Pradesh, there was not sufficient water in the Narmada dam that we could release for farmers. But the water level in the dam started rising rapidly as it rained heavily in its catchment area in Madhya Pradesh,” he said to The Indian Express.
