Haryana’s new chief minister Nayab Saini today cleared the floor test after the BJP ended its alliance with the Jannayak Janta Party (JJP). Nayab Saini assumed the office yesterday amid a split with Dushyant Chautala-led JJP.
Former chief minister and BJP leader Manohar Lal Khattar and his entire cabinet including the deputy chief minister Dushyant Chautala had stepped down on Monday.
The ties between the two parties, which they had formed in the 2019 assembly elections when the BJP fell short of a simple majority, severed after the former deputy chief minister walked out of the coalition.
Nayab Singh Saini-led BJP government cleared the floor test with a voice vote. However, when the new chief minister and his five other ministers moved the motion seeking trust, four JJP MLAs left the assembly. The JJP had issued a whip, directing its 10 MLAs to remain absent from the House during the voting.
In hours, the state politics witnessed a rapid change of government, with the resignation of the senior BJP leader and former chief minister Manohar Lal Khattar and his cabinet including three ministers from the JJP. The split in the ties of the JJP-BJP alliance caused the unexpected end of the government formed in 2019.
However, the BJP proved a single majority by winning the floor test today. The new chief minister praised the former chief minister saying that he was a saint and has given a lot to Haryana. He strengthened the state and it was his thinking that weaker sections and the poor should get benefits at their doorstep, Nayab Saini added.
