Hazardous Cargo Spill Triggers Public Alert Off Kerala Coast

The Kerala State Disaster Management Authority (KSDMA) has issued a public alert following a cargo spill from a Liberian-flagged vessel in the Arabian Sea, approximately 38 nautical miles southwest of Kochi. The incident, which occurred on Saturday due to turbulent weather linked to the southwest monsoon, led to hazardous materials reportedly falling into the sea.

The cargo ship, travelling from Vizhinjam in Thiruvananthapuram to Kochi before heading to Thoothukudi, encountered severe conditions that caused it to tilt and begin listing. Although the vessel was scheduled to dock in Kochi by 10pm, it remains adrift and inclined dangerously close to the Kerala coastline.

Initial reports suggest that containers aboard the vessel may contain marine gas oil or Very Low Sulphur Fuel Oil, prompting concerns over environmental and public safety. Authorities have strongly advised fishermen and coastal residents not to touch or investigate any objects that wash ashore, and to inform the police immediately upon spotting suspicious debris. The public has been instructed to contact the emergency number 112 in such cases.

The Indian Navy has confirmed that 22 to 24 crew members were on board during the accident. While nine crew members escaped using life jackets, rescue operations were underway to locate the rest. Life-saving gear has been airdropped onto the vessel to assist those still on board.

A latest update from the Indian Coast Guard said 21 out of total 24 crew members have been rescued and three top officials are on board now to lead salvage operations.

Meanwhile, coastal police are broadcasting warnings via loudspeakers across shoreline communities, urging people to remain vigilant and avoid any unknown materials that may drift ashore. The Coast Guard continues to monitor the situation closely, as concerns grow over a possible fuel leak and its environmental impact.

Indian Coast Guard statement:

“Liberia-flagged container vessel MSC ELSA 3 developed a dangerous 26° list en route to Kochi after departing Vizhinjam Port. Indian Coast Guard sprang into action—rescuing 21 of 24 crew members using liferafts and aircraft support. While 9 survivors are now safe aboard Han Yi, 12 more are on ICGS Arnvesh. Rescue ops for the remaining 3 are ongoing. Salvage efforts are underway to prevent environmental damage.

21 crew members rescued, 03 crew (Captain, Chief Engg and 2nd Engg) remain onboard to facilitate planned salvage operations. ICG ships and aircrafts continue to coordinate and monitor the situation. Some containers have fallen due to vessel tilting, risk assessment is in progress. All efforts are in hand to maintain stability of the Vessel.”
