Senior Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, who rode a bike from Leh to Pangong lake in Ladakh yesterday, paid tribute to his father and former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi on his birth anniversary near the famous lake.

“Dad, the dreams you had for India shimmer through these priceless memories in your eyes. In your footsteps lies my path – I understand the struggles and dreams of every Indian, I am listening to the voice of Mother India,” later he shared on X accompanied with a tribute video.

The Congress leader who reached Ladakh two days ago, is expected to visit Kargil and Nubra valley in the coming days.

Rajiv Gandhi, who was born on August 20, 1944, in Bombay, was the youngest Prime Minister of India, perhaps even one of the youngest elected heads of government in the world. Following the footsteps of his mother and grandfather, Rajiv Gandhi was in office from October 1984 to December 1989.

Considered as the architect of India”s information technology and telecom revolution, Rajiv Gandhi brought in the energy of youthfulness to Indian politics, however, his time in office was marred by the Sikh genocide in Delhi and surrounding areas as well as Bofors scandal allegations.

Rajiv Gandhi had received the biggest mandate in India” general elections” history in 1984, in the elections held after his mother and then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi was assassinated on October 31, 1984.
