India Emerges as Leading Source of Migrants to OECD Countries

India has emerged as the leading source of migrants to OECD countries, surpassing China from 2020 to 2022.

According to the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) report titled “International Migration Outlook 2023,” approximately 6.1 million permanent-type migrants moved to OECD countries between 2020 and 2022, representing a significant 26% increase. The majority of these migrants chose the Anglosphere – the United States, United Kingdom, and Singapore – as their destination, indicating a clear preference for English-speaking nations.

The tech industry has emerged as a major attractor of Indian migrants, driven by the demand for skilled workers in these countries. This exchange has not only boosted the growth of the host countries but has also provided opportunities for Indian migrants to enhance their skills and contribute to India”s growth.

Remittances from Indian migrants, particularly high-skilled workers based in countries like the USA, the UK, and Singapore, have also provided a significant economic boost to India. In 2022 alone, remittances to India totaled $111 billion, accounting for 3.3% of India”s GDP.

To sustain this positive trend and achieve developed country status by 2047, as highlighted in the report, India needs to focus on certain areas for future growth, such as enhancing education, creating more and better job opportunities, and improving the quality of life.
